Background
Thrombomodulin(TM,CD141,THBD)isanendothelialcellexpressedtransmembraneglycoproteinthatcanformacomplexwiththecoagulationfactor,Thrombin.TheThrombomodulin/ThrombincomplexconvertsproteinCtoitsactivatedform,proteinCa,whichinturnproteolyticallycleavesanddeactivatesfactorVaandfactorVIIIa,twoessentialcomponentsofthecoagulationmechanism.Thisinactivationreducesthegenerationofadditionalthrombinandtherebyeffectivelypreventscontinuedcoagulation.ReducedlevelsofThrombomodulincancorrelatewiththepathogenesisofcertaincardiovasculardiseases,suchasatherosclerosisandthrombosis.However,theserumlevelsofthetruncatedcirculatingformofThrombomodulinaretypicallyelevatedduringinflammationandinthepresenceofvariousinflammatoryrelateddiseases.RecombinantsolubleThrombomodulinisa491aminoacidglycoproteincontainingtheextracellulardomainofThrombomodulin.
